Habits, habits, habits! You know, those old ones really do die hard, and starting new ones can be, well, a bit of a struggle—some more than others. It’s wild how we manage to complicate the simplest things! So, let’s chat about those simple habits we often overlook that can make a world of difference.

We humans thrive on the excitement of a clean slate, driven by the belief that a new beginning means endless possibilities. It’s no wonder New Year’s resolutions are so popular.

But let’s be real: most of us set unrealistic goals and rely solely on willpower. And guess what? You don’t even have to wait until the new year to get started.

Here are 4 simple habits you can start now:

It’s better to get 1% better than not at all.

Start Your Day at Night

“One of my biggest lessons this year is that your day starts the night before. Writing down your to-do list for the next day before bed sets you up for success. You’ll wake up more productive and ready to tackle your priorities.

Trust me, planning your day in advance makes all the difference. I always say, “Don’t wish upon a star”—in other words, don’t just hope things will get done. Write them down, make a plan, and you’ll feel way more in control of your life.

If this is the only habit you nail down, guurl, you’re already setting yourself up for success. It’s better to get 1% better than not at all, so start small… (not me rhyming).

Tips to prepare the night before:

  • Lay out your work or school clothes.
  • Pack your gym bag if you plan on working out.
  • Write your to-do list.

Set a Bedtime

Let’s keep it real: we all love those late-night scrolls, catching up on what everyone and their mama are doing. But, we all feel the effects the next morning, and that post-scroll grogginess never lies!

One thing I’ve been working on with my health coach is setting a consistent bedtime and practicing a digital sunset—turning off electronics at least an hour before bed. It’s been tough, but worth it.

Setting a bedtime helps regulate your body’s circadian rhythm, ensuring you get enough rest to feel refreshed the next day. Routine sleep = a productive day!

Meal Prep

Don’t run away just yet—hear me out! I’m not trying to sell you on a diet. Trust me, I hate diets. But meal prepping? It changed my life once I shifted my mindset. One of my mantras (prepare to get sick of me and my sayings!) is, “You can do the same thing differently with a new mindset.”

I used to dread meal prepping because I thought it was tied to dieting. But here’s the thing: meal prepping is about fueling your body in a way that keeps you organized and ensures you’re eating well throughout the day, especially if you’re a busy woman.

Just carve out a few hours a week, and instead of dreading it, see it as an investment in your future self.

Pro tip: Keep it simple. You don’t need to make complicated 20-ingredient meals. Explore new recipes and try a new one each week. I promise, some will stick, and soon, you’ll have your go-to meals on rotation.

Dress Up

Okay, I don’t have all the scientific facts here, but we all know this truth: when you look good, you feel good. You don’t need to break the bank or buy a whole new wardrobe. Use what you already have!

Dressing up doesn’t mean you have to dress like an influencer every single day. Seriously, just grab that one top that makes you feel like a rockstar and rock it!

Take a few minutes to put yourself together—maybe throw on a fun accessory or add a pop of color. You’d be amazed at how much more motivated you’ll feel! Who knew that a little eyeliner and a cute outfit could work wonders for your confidence? And honestly, who doesn’t want a habit that makes them feel prettier?

Bonus: Do Things That Make You Happy

I know this seems like a silly New Year’s resolution or habit, but life gets busy, and we often find ourselves doing things just because we have to. Every now and then, it’s essential to make time for what makes your heart smile.

This could be a hobby, hanging out with friends, enjoying your favorite meal—whatever brings you joy. But, like anything else, plan it! Don’t just hope it’ll happen because life gets busy, and you’ll end up no doing it.

Quick story: One day, my 7-year-old sister came home from school all grouchy. She told me her day started great but ended badly. I said to her, “Do something that makes your heart happy.” A few minutes later, she came back smiling and told me she was happy again. I asked what she did, and she pointed to our cat. So, it can be as simple as playing with a pet!

Alright girl, go out there and be great! These habits might seem small, but trust me, you’ll feel more motivated if you begin now and continue while everyone else is just getting started. Stop waiting for the ‘perfect’ time to invest in yourself. Start your New Year’s resolution now!
